If you constantly find yourself battling bad breath, you are not alone. Bad breath, or halitosis, can make your life miserable if you are always feeling self-conscious when you are around others. There are a myriad of factors that could be causing your bad breath, and we highly recommend seeing your doctor and our team to root out the source so it can be properly addressed. This is important because there are many factors that could be playing a part.

What Causes Bad Breath?

-Oral bacteria coating the tongue interact with amino acids in the foods you eat, creating odorous sulfur compounds. Brushing your tongue to remove it can lower bad breath by up to 70%.

-The foods you eat, like garlic and onions are also absorbed into the bloodstream where it can affect your breath until the food leaves your body.

-If you don’t clean your teeth, gums and tongue daily, bits of food particles can linger on those surfaces, feeding the oral bacteria. Brushing and flossing every day and getting routine dental exams and cleanings to remove hardened plaque (tartar) help prevent bad breath (and taste) in your mouth.

-If you wear dentures, the same thing can happen if you don’t clean them daily to remove bacteria, fungi, and stray food particles, leaving you with bad breath.

-Gum disease, or more specifically, periodontal disease can be the culprit and will require treatment to eliminate this issue.

-Dry mouth, also known as Xerostomia, is a common culprit of halitosis. Normally, your saliva rinses away oral bacteria and bits of food left behind after chewing. Without proper hydration, your saliva is diluted and ineffective. You can get dry mouth if you take certain medications, breath through your mouth instead of your nose or have a problem with your salivary glands.

-Using tobacco products, whether that is cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco or chewing snuff.

-Certain medical conditions like a respiratory infection, chronic bronchitis, postnasal drip, chronic sinusitis, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, or stomach issues can leave your breath smelling and tasting bad.

Here is a list of treatment options for halitosis:

-Visit your dentist often for dental exams and a detailed cleaning of your teeth and gums. Your dentist will also be able to see if gum disease or any conditions threatening the health of your smile that could be causing the concerns.

-Mouthwash is known to kill bacteria and neutralize acids that are clinging to your teeth and gums causing the bad breath.

-If you wear dentures, remember to remove them at night and clean them thoroughly. If you neglect your dentures, then you are inviting bacteria into your mouth causing your bad breath and could make the bad breath worse over time.

-Most bad breath bacteria are found in the gums or nesting on your tongue. If you try brushing your tongue or using a tongue scraper to clear bacteria, you could remove the bacteria from your mouth causing the stench.

-Brushing and flossing your teeth are always the essentials in preventing bad breath and keeping a healthy smile. Bad breath can be triggered by cavities and neglect of these two simple, daily habits.

-Stop smoking. Tobacco use of any kind is known for leading to bad breath. This habit can harm your oral health severely and threaten your life in the form of cancer.

Most individuals at some point in time in their life have experienced halitosis. Halitosis, also known as bad breath, is an oral health condition in which foul odors emanate from your mouth. Bad breath can be caused by bacteria and plaque buildup in your mouth, lingering food residue, oral health ailments, and deep underlying issues within your body. In order to treat your bad breath, it is important to first understand what is causing it.

If you have bad breath that is being caused by your mouth, mouthwash may be able to treat it. This includes bad breath that is caused by foods you eat and the habits you partake in. If you have poor oral hygiene, it is important to first rinse away all bacteria and plaque buildup. However, if bad breath continues to return despite effective oral health care cleanings, the use of mouthwash, and the avoidance of bad habits, it may be caused by an underlying illness.

Gum disease, which is an infection of your gum tissue, can contribute to bad breath. In order to ensure that bad breath does not continue to return, it is important to first treat your gum disease. In addition, bad breath can be caused by underlying ailments deep within your body. This includes any liver or kidney problems and ailments that you may be suffering from. In addition, respiratory tract infections have been known to cause bad breath.

If you would like to experience the sensation of a superb smile with bad breath treatments, please stop by Denver Restorative Dentistry for an oral exam from Dr. Taylor Goggins and our team at our remarkable dentist office in Broomfield, Colorado. At Denver Restorative Dentistry in Broomfield, Colorado, our dentists, Taylor Goggins and D. Brian Aguirre are pleased to support your efforts to achieve strong oral health for a lifetime of smiles. Let’s look at four things you can do to keep your smile healthier.

 #1 Dental Flossing

Brushing only cleans 50% of your tooth surfaces, because 50% of the harmful bacteria in your mouth accumulate between the teeth where the teeth meet because your toothbrush can’t reach those areas. This is where flossing comes as it can clean between the teeth and along the gumline, effectively fighting off cavities and gum disease from harming your smile.

 #2 Daily Habits

What habits do you have that show up in your smile? The condition of your teeth and gums reveal the following:

  • If you are a regular soda, coffee, tea or wine drinker.
  • Whether you are having excess stress in your life.
  • If you are eating a nutrient-poor diet.
  • If you have an eating disorder.
  • If you use tobacco or drink alcohol excessively.

Clues that give away your daily habits include tooth stains and discoloration, tooth enamel erosion from acid, bruxism (teeth grinding), dry mouth, halitosis, and even various medical conditions such as diabetes and pregnancy can be revealed by looking at your oral health.

#3 Dental Anxiety

You might be experiencing dental anxiety if you avoid dental visits because you are afraid of experiencing pain during a procedure, or you feel nervous about having someone working in your mouth. Whatever your reason, thanks to modern advances in dental sedation, you can have the care you need in a comfortable, relaxing environment. Whether relief comes in the form of taking a pill, breathing in nitrous oxide, inhaling anesthesia, or using numbing agents, you can get the help you need to have a pleasant treatment.

#4 Dental Visits

When you come in for a dental cleaning and exam, dental issues will be detected while they are still easy and economical to treat and hardened dental plaque will be removed, which can cause tooth decay and gum disease if ignored. Both gum disease and early tooth decay are unnoticeable until they cause pain, and by then, some damage has been one.

To keep your smile healthy, eat a balanced diet, brush, and floss daily, and see your dentist regularly. To schedule your next visit with our team, please call 303-586-1019 to give your smile the care it deserves!

Have you ever heard of impacted teeth? Do you ever wonder exactly what an impacted tooth could do the health of your smile? Do you know what you can do to address this issue? Fortunately, there are a number of things you could consider doing.

If you have an impacted tooth, you could have to cope with a number of serious problems. For instance, an impacted tooth may push against your other teeth, shifting their position. If your impacted tooth is a wisdom tooth, it could undo dental work you’ve had or could make new dental work a necessity. However, an impacted tooth—which is most commonly a wisdom tooth—can be completely painless, and you may not realize you have an issue.

If you have an impacted tooth, your gums could also swell or become infected. This may be painful and could cause infections in your other teeth. An impacted tooth could also lead to infections in your jaw and ear as well. You may be able to recognize an impacted tooth if you have a constant bad taste in your mouth, bad breath, or pain when you bite or chew.

Typically, our team can address this issue simply by removing the tooth. If you’re interested in learning more about impacted teeth, please don’t hesitate to contact Denver Restorative Dentistry at 303-586-1019. Dr. Goggins, Dr. Esguerra and the rest of our team are always happy to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
