Do you like what you see when you flash a smile at yourself in the mirror? Is your first impression the best it can be? Even with good daily oral hygiene habits, your teeth might look better with a little refresher to help them look whiter, brighter, and more appealing. If that’s true for you, a professional teeth whitening treatment might make all the difference. Thanks to modern advances in dental technology and techniques, teeth whitening is better than ever and affordable whether you are a working professional, student or stay-at-home parent! Today’s teeth whitening options are also easier and more comfortable to achieve.

But you do want to know what you are doing when whitening your teeth, making sure the product is safe and effective. If your pearly whites look yellow or deeply stained, that may happen for various reasons.

Causes of Tooth Discoloration

-Poor or inconsistent daily oral hygiene care
-Skipping professional dental cleanings
-Constant teeth grinding
-Regularly consuming staining foods and drinks like coffee, tea, wine or soda
-Naturally getting older.
-Using tobacco in any form
-Medical treatments like head and neck radiation or chemotherapy
-Certain medications
-Too much fluoride
-Dental trauma from sports

There are typically two teeth whitening options, extrinsic whitening and intrinsic whitening.

Extrinsic whitening: This teeth whitening option involves utilizing a mild abrasive to get stains off of the outside surfaces of your teeth. The tooth color under the stains emerges but unfortunately also doesn’t actually change the tooth’s color either. So it basically brightens your teeth which can make them look fresher.

Intrinsic whitening: This teeth whitening option actually uses a tooth bleaching agent so it can change the color of your tooth enamel, so it not only brightens your teeth but whitens them!

There are ways to prevent tooth enamel from staining when you eat and drink. Dr. Taylor Goggins and our team in Broomfield, Colorado understand that enjoying your daily coffee or cranberry juice with breakfast is important even though they can stain your smile. Check out the following tips you can take to limit tooth stains.

–Using a straw: Sipping staining drinks from a straw can effectively limit their ability to discolor your teeth. This goes equally for fruit juices, soda, lattes, or tea. Drinking through a straw will help keep the staining agents from discoloring the visible areas of your smile while also preventing tooth sensitivity.

–Brush, floss and use mouthwash: By removing food debris after eating or drinking staining foods helps limit their ability to discolor enamel. This simple action removes lingering staining agents and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash helps prevent plaque from forming. Plaque is a sticky substance that allows staining agents a foothold to adhere to.

–Say no to tobacco: Unfortunately, tobacco stains are notorious whether you chew or smoke it. In fact, tobacco is the one tooth staining habit we strongly encourage giving up as it affects your oral health as well as your overall health. Fortunately, there are tobacco cessation programs available to help you take the leap. Speak to your doctor for more information.

–Professional dental cleanings: Professional dental cleanings are vital to a healthy smile. These cleanings let us remove hardened plaque which otherwise provides a surface which stains can adhere to.

As you can see, if you regularly enjoy teeth staining foods such as blueberry for dessert or beets for your health, you don’t have to stop eating them just to keep your pearly whites bright.

Our Denver Restorative Dentistry team is here to help you keep your smile bright. We offer teeth whitening treatments for our patients in Broomfield, Colorado seeking help with their tooth stains. If you are interested in a tooth whitening treatment, please call 303-586-1019 today!
