When it comes to your smile, our prosthodontists, Dr. Goggins, Dr. Aguirre, and Dr. Pitz, help patients like yourself every day to get the proper dental care you need and deserve. One of the ways we fix minor to moderate tooth damage is by using dental fillings or inlays and onlays, depending on the tooth. Do you know the difference between those three options?

Dental Fillings

You have probably already had a dental filling done before and it is one of our most common treatments for tooth issues caused by cavities, fractures or chips in a tooth. By placing a dental filling, our prosthodontists can restore your tooth’s original form and function so your smile can continue to thrive. At Denver Restorative Dentistry, we provide patients with a choice of either amalgam fillings or composite fillings. Both are excellent options for restoring damaged teeth.

When you come in for your dental filling treatment, you will be made comfortable so you can relax while we work. The treatment is done in just one visit to our office. First, we will remove any damaged and decayed areas of the tooth. Then we will clean the area so it is pristine and ready to be filled with your filling material of choice which will be contoured to your tooth’s shape so it can blend right in. Lastly, the filling fill is hardened so it can protect your tooth for many years to come!

Dental Inlays and Onlays

The other options we offer for tooth repairs are inlays and onlays. These are also great at fixing tooth damage and decay. Inlays and onlays are used when a tooth needs more protection than a filling can provide, but not as extensive as to require a dental crown. In fact, inlays and onlays are referred to as partial crowns and are crafted specifically to your tooth using either porcelain, composite resin or gold. Just as with fillings, our goal is to restore your natural tooth’s health, structure, function and looks. Inlays and onlays appear so natural that they are hardly noticeable. They also preserve the structure of your tooth. So when do you need an inlay versus an onlay? We will apply an inlay when the damage doesn’t extend to the cusp of the tooth, while an onlay is applied when there is cusp damage.

Don’t Delay, Call Today!

If you have one or more damaged teeth in your smile, we encourage you to get them evaluated and treated as soon as possible so that you can preserve the natural tooth. Whether you need a dental filling or a dental inlay or onlay, our skilled prosthodontists are ready to take care of all your dental needs. Please give us a call today at 303-586-1019 if you need help with your teeth, gums, breath or TMJ’s (jaw).

Are you familiar with the effects of sedation dentistry and how it can influence your oral health? Sedation dentistry is a field of dentistry that is specifically designed to help calm and relax patients during their oral health care procedures. When visiting the dentist, speak with your dentist about your options for any treatments that you may need. Several options are available to calm and minimize stress and anxiety that may occur during your oral health care procedures.

If you’re looking for a sedative that provides a mild relaxant and doesn’t put you to sleep, consider the use of nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide, also referred to as laughing gas, is placed in a mask over a person’s mouth to provide them with a calming sensation that will wear off rather quickly.

If you require something a little stronger, consider an oral sedation through pill sedation. With a pill sedative, an individual can ingest a pill that can kick in roughly an hour later so that it appropriate treatments and procedures can be given. Dosages can be adjusted to either make you drowsy or place you in a state of sleep. Similar to pill sedation, intravenous sedation is effective because it can be monitored and adjusted. Unlike pill sedation through, intravenous sedation works almost immediately so that your dentist will be able to provide care shortly after the sedative is applied.

For the deepest level of sedation, general anesthesia will be needed. Anesthesia is provided as medications that will make you completely relaxed and take you to a state of either almost unconsciousness or total unconsciousness. Depending on what your dentist needs, they can put you into a state of deep sleep from which you will not awake, so the complex procedures and surgeries can be applied.

If you experience anxiety when you have to see your dentist, you may be experiencing dental phobia or dental anxiety, and you are not alone. If fear is preventing you from getting treatment in Broomfield, Colorado for your oral health, we are happy to help. To help you feel more relaxed and comfortable in the dental chair, our Denver Restorative Dentistry dental team encourages you to do the following things:

Talk to the Dentist

Tell Dr. Taylor Goggins how you feel when you are in their office. Make sure they knows about your dental fears and phobias. If your dentist knows, they will be able to determine the best way to manage and help your situation.

Bring Music

Music helps many people relax, so bring an iPod or CD player into the office with you. Listen to calming music throughout your treatment so you can maintain a slow and steady heartbeat and so you won’t feel as nervous.

Discuss Dental Sedation

Dental sedation is a great tool that relaxes many patients when they visit the dentist’s office. We are pleased to offer sedatives like oral sedation, nitrous oxide sedation, and IV sedation for our patients struggling with dental anxiety. We encourage you to talk to your dentist and discuss your sedative options.

Determine a “stop” signal

Having a stop signal will help you have the control you want during your appointment. Whenever you feel nervous, scared, or uncomfortable, just show your dentist the signal and they will give you the break you need. The signal could be something as simple as raising your hand, blinking three times, or making a coughing sound.

As you do these things, you will notice your anxiety slowly melting away and you will finally feel comfortable in the dental chair. If you would like more tips on how to treat dental anxiety, call Denver Restorative Dentistry today at 303-586-1019. Dr. Taylor Goggins and our friendly dental team are happy to help you in any way we can!
