When it comes to maintaining good health, many people focus on diet and exercise while overlooking a surprising aspect of their well-being: oral health. But recently, research has proven the profound connection between oral health and overall wellness. It turns out that a healthy mouth isn’t just about a bright smile; it directly impacts your entire body!

Mouth and Body

Not surprisingly, oral health is more than just having cavity-free teeth and fresh breath. It encompasses the health of all aspects of your mouth; gum tissue and tongue, along with the overall structure of your mouth. When these areas are overlooked and neglected, it can lead to a host of health issues that extend far beyond your oral cavity.

Periodontal Disease

One of the most well-established links between oral health and overall wellness is the connection between gum disease and systemic health conditions. Gum disease, commonly known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection that can result in inflammation and the deterioration of your gum tissues and underlying tooth-supporting bones. This chronic inflammation can have serious consequences throughout your body.

Systemic Disease

Studies have increasingly shown that gum disease is linked to a greater risk of several systemic diseases, like heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The inflammation and bacteria associated with gum disease can enter your bloodstream, affecting other organs, and leading to these serious health issues.

Respiratory Health

Furthermore, poor oral health can impact your respiratory health. The mouth serves as a gateway to the respiratory tract, and oral infections or inflammation can increase the risk of respiratory conditions including pneumonia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Mental Health

Maintaining consistent oral hygiene practices can also impact your mental health. Oral health problems like toothaches or gum pain, can cause chronic discomfort and affect your overall quality of life. This can lead to stress, anxiety and even depression. Additionally, the social and self-esteem impacts of dental issues can easily take a toll on your mental well-being.

Tips to Protect Your Health

So, what can you do to ensure your oral health contributes to your overall wellness? Here are some tips:

  1. Routine Dental Check-ups: Visit our skilled prosthodontists for regular check-ups and cleanings to catch and address oral health issues in their early stages.
  2. Brush and Floss: Establish a daily regimen that includes brushing your teeth a minimum of two times a day and flossing once a day to effectively eliminate dental plaque and oral bacteria.
  3. Healthy Diet: Stick to a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, while limiting sugary snacks and beverages.
  4. Avoid Smoking: Smoking is a major risk factor for gum disease that can harm your overall health.
  5. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps maintain a moist mouth and can prevent dry mouth, which is conducive to bacterial growth.

Practicing preventive dental care is one of the most crucial goals to maintain good oral health and prevent tooth decay and periodontal disease from invading your smile. Dental problems can be painful, costly, and time-consuming to treat, so it is essential to take preventative measures to keep your pearly whites and gums as healthy as possible. Here are some tips on how to practice preventive dental care for a healthier, more beautiful smile!

Preventative Dental Care Tips

1 – Brush your teeth every single day. One of the most important steps you can take to prevent tooth decay and periodontal disease is to brush your teeth daily without fail. A good rule of thumb is brushing your teeth twice a day (for at least two minutes each session). Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth and gums.

2 – Floss at least once a day. Flossing is yet another essential part of practicing preventive dental care. It helps to clear away dental plaque and food particles between teeth and along your gum line. There are many flossing options available to you, so be sure to find one that works best for you and then do it!

3 – Limit sweet and acidic foods and beverages. Sugary and acidic foods and drinks can erode tooth enamel and lead to cavities and tooth decay. You want to limit your intake of these items, such as candy, soda, and citrus fruits, take the time to brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water afterward to remove any lingering sugar or acid.

4 – See our prosthodontists regularly. Routine dental checkups are essential to maintaining good oral health and preventing dental problems. Our skilled prosthodontists can detect early signs of tooth decay and periodontal disease and recommend treatment before the problems worsen. They can also clean your teeth and remove any plaque or tartar buildup, which can otherwise leave you facing tooth decay and gum disease.

5 – Rinse with mouthwash. Mouthwash is another useful tool for preventing tooth decay and gum disease. It can help kill bacteria and freshen your breath to complement your daily flossing and brushing. A good choice of mouthwash is one that contains fluoride and antimicrobial agents and use it as recommended.

6 – Kick the smoking habit. Smoking leads to a host of dental problems, including tooth decay, gum disease and oral cancer. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your oral and overall health!.

You can count on receiving a professional teeth cleaning that will leave your teeth smooth and gleaming. You will also receive a thorough dental exam from our experienced prosthodontists to make sure your oral health is optimal. During your teeth cleaning appointment, you can look forward to the following treatment.

Routine Dental Cleaning and Exam

-Our hygienist will remove all the plaque or tartar (dental calculus) from your teeth and below the gumline to prevent tooth decay and gum disease from taking hold.

-Your pearly whites will then be thoroughly flossed and polished to make them shine.

-Our prosthodontists will examine your mouth to spot any harmful dental problems that might be developing.

-We may use dental X-rays to evaluate your smile more intensively to detect issues that might not be visible with a visual inspection.

Our biannual dental cleanings allow us to maximize your preventative dental care regularly. These routine dental cleanings and exams are one of the most valuable ways to help you keep your smile healthy. The goal is to help you prevent tooth-destroying cavities and advancing gum disease (periodontal disease). These regular checkups are designed to spot problems early so they can be treated before they permanently damage teeth and gums and while treatment is least invasive and costly.

June is here and that means national Oral Health Month is too! This is a great time to focus on taking better care of your pearly whites and your gums so you can have many years of healthier smiles to show off. According to the American Dental Association, dental health has come a long way since 5,000 years ago when the first known recorded dentist, Egyptian Hesi-Res took care of people’s teeth!

Dental History

-As recently as the 17th century, white enamel was starting to be used on the teeth and nitrous oxide was used to help people relax while getting dental care as comfortably as possible.

-Long before Covid-19, the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 19th century made personal protective equipment PPE a thing for dental healthcare professionals.

-And if you like reclining while your mouth is being worked on, you can thank the American dentist, Josiah Flagg, for creating the first dental chair as we know it, complete with extended armrests that held medical instruments and even an adjustable headrest.

-While the 1800s saw the beginning of toothpaste in tubes, commercial floss arrived in 1882, and in 1960, electric toothbrushes also became a thing here in the states.

Daily Dental Care

Your mouth needs daily attention because while your body can heal itself your teeth can’t! And if your teeth are in poor health, that means your body won’t be far behind because weak or missing teeth can’t properly get the nutrients you need from the food you eat. Fresh fruit and veggies and chewy meats, all need strong teeth to bite, chew and eat properly. Strong tooth roots, supported gum tissue and healthy bone all work together to keep your teeth and body healthy.

Were you aware that flossing, along with daily brushing can prolong your life expectancy by up to six years? Flossing helps get rid of harmful dental plaque and tartar so it doesn’t spread throughout your body. And while brushing is crucial, flossing helps keep your mouth healthier while protecting against heart disease, oral cancers, Alzheimer’s, kidney failure and diabetes by cleaning in between teeth and below the gum line to get rid of harmful bacteria.

Smiling With Confidence

If you’re proud of your healthy smile, show it off! You can smile without embarrassment and share your oral hygiene tips with those you love! If you have issues with your smile, now is the time to take care of them before they get worse. We are happy

When it comes to your smile, our prosthodontists, Dr. Goggins, Dr. Aguirre, and Dr. Pitz, help patients like yourself every day to get the proper dental care you need and deserve. One of the ways we fix minor to moderate tooth damage is by using dental fillings or inlays and onlays, depending on the tooth. Do you know the difference between those three options?

Dental Fillings

You have probably already had a dental filling done before and it is one of our most common treatments for tooth issues caused by cavities, fractures or chips in a tooth. By placing a dental filling, our prosthodontists can restore your tooth’s original form and function so your smile can continue to thrive. At Denver Restorative Dentistry, we provide patients with a choice of either amalgam fillings or composite fillings. Both are excellent options for restoring damaged teeth.

When you come in for your dental filling treatment, you will be made comfortable so you can relax while we work. The treatment is done in just one visit to our office. First, we will remove any damaged and decayed areas of the tooth. Then we will clean the area so it is pristine and ready to be filled with your filling material of choice which will be contoured to your tooth’s shape so it can blend right in. Lastly, the filling fill is hardened so it can protect your tooth for many years to come!

Dental Inlays and Onlays

The other options we offer for tooth repairs are inlays and onlays. These are also great at fixing tooth damage and decay. Inlays and onlays are used when a tooth needs more protection than a filling can provide, but not as extensive as to require a dental crown. In fact, inlays and onlays are referred to as partial crowns and are crafted specifically to your tooth using either porcelain, composite resin or gold. Just as with fillings, our goal is to restore your natural tooth’s health, structure, function and looks. Inlays and onlays appear so natural that they are hardly noticeable. They also preserve the structure of your tooth. So when do you need an inlay versus an onlay? We will apply an inlay when the damage doesn’t extend to the cusp of the tooth, while an onlay is applied when there is cusp damage.

Don’t Delay, Call Today!

If you have one or more damaged teeth in your smile, we encourage you to get them evaluated and treated as soon as possible so that you can preserve the natural tooth. Whether you need a dental filling or a dental inlay or onlay, our skilled prosthodontists are ready to take care of all your dental needs. Please give us a call today at 303-586-1019 if you need help with your teeth, gums, breath or TMJ’s (jaw).

Because you routinely come in for dental cleanings and exams, it can be easy to forget why these visits are so important if your teeth are in great shape. But for keeping your teeth and gums healthy and strong, it’s vital to see us regularly and not just take good oral health for granted!

A healthy beautiful smile starts in the home and with those biannual cleanings. Along with your daily brushing and flossing routine to remove harmful plaque, those professional dental cleanings are the only way to remove tartar buildup (made from hardened plaque) that can otherwise lead to cavities and gum disease.

Fact: The leading cause of tooth loss is periodontal disease. Catching it early means it can often be reversed though lost gum tissue doesn’t regenerate.

When you come in for your cleanings, you can look forward to the following:

Our dental skilled dental hygienists will use special tools to floss and polish your pearly whites after removing tartar buildup around the teeth and gum line to prevent tooth enamel loss, allowing tooth decay and gum disease to gain a foothold.

Our experienced prosthodontists will give your smile a comprehensive exam to see if there are any developing problems while they are still in their early stages and least invasive to treat. Dental X-rays are also taken yearly to detect problems that can’t be seen with the eye alone.

If it is time for your next dental checkup, be sure to come in to stay on top of your oral health game. If you haven’t scheduled a cleaning lately, it’s time to make sure that happens. You can call 303-586-1019 or schedule your appointment with our prosthodontists in Broomfield, Colorado, online. Our Denver Restorative Dentistry team, led by Dr. Taylor Goggins, Dr. Brian Aguirre and Dr. Anna Pitz can make your dental cleaning comfortable and your teeth shine!

If you constantly find yourself battling bad breath, you are not alone. Bad breath, or halitosis, can make your life miserable if you are always feeling self-conscious when you are around others. There are a myriad of factors that could be causing your bad breath, and we highly recommend seeing your doctor and our team to root out the source so it can be properly addressed. This is important because there are many factors that could be playing a part.

What Causes Bad Breath?

-Oral bacteria coating the tongue interact with amino acids in the foods you eat, creating odorous sulfur compounds. Brushing your tongue to remove it can lower bad breath by up to 70%.

-The foods you eat, like garlic and onions are also absorbed into the bloodstream where it can affect your breath until the food leaves your body.

-If you don’t clean your teeth, gums and tongue daily, bits of food particles can linger on those surfaces, feeding the oral bacteria. Brushing and flossing every day and getting routine dental exams and cleanings to remove hardened plaque (tartar) help prevent bad breath (and taste) in your mouth.

-If you wear dentures, the same thing can happen if you don’t clean them daily to remove bacteria, fungi, and stray food particles, leaving you with bad breath.

-Gum disease, or more specifically, periodontal disease can be the culprit and will require treatment to eliminate this issue.

-Dry mouth, also known as Xerostomia, is a common culprit of halitosis. Normally, your saliva rinses away oral bacteria and bits of food left behind after chewing. Without proper hydration, your saliva is diluted and ineffective. You can get dry mouth if you take certain medications, breath through your mouth instead of your nose or have a problem with your salivary glands.

-Using tobacco products, whether that is cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco or chewing snuff.

-Certain medical conditions like a respiratory infection, chronic bronchitis, postnasal drip, chronic sinusitis, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, or stomach issues can leave your breath smelling and tasting bad.

Call Today!

If you find yourself with chronic bad breath, we can help! Stepping up your daily oral hygiene care along with routine dental cleanings are an important part of prevention and treatment, as well as treating the causes listed above. Our Denver Restorative Dentistry team offers effective halitosis treatment in Broomfield, Colorado. If you take good care of your teeth and gums, your natural teeth often remain healthy and strong for a lifetime of beautiful smiles! This means seeing your dentist for regular cleanings and checkups supplementing your own oral hygiene habits, brushing and flossing daily! But sometimes the unforeseen happens and you can lose a tooth because of an accident, decay or an extraction.

When something like this arises, you will want to replace the missing tooth to make sure your smile looks great and to keep your remaining teeth functioning properly without having to make up for that lost tooth. Keeping all of your teeth in place is what is needed to prevent your facial structure from becoming sunken, making you look older than you are. This is where our prosthodontists come into the picture.

Seeing a prosthodontist can help ensure that your smile is in the best of hands, and your dental care is top-notch. With three years of formal education and training past general dentistry under their belt, our prosthodontists give you the “extra mile” in dental care, making sure that your smile looks natural and the restoration fits perfectly.

At Denver Restorative Dentistry, our prosthodontists Dr. Taylor Goggins, Dr. Brian Aguirre and Dr. Anna Pitz are experts in cosmetic and restorative dentistry. They perform a variety of dental treatments, including:

-Dental hybrids
-Dentures
-Implants
-Restorations
-Veneers
-All-on-4®

With their training and experience, our prosthodontists will take excellent care of your smile, with your treatments customized to your needs. Our team also has a boutique in-house lab, where they are able to ensure the highest quality of your restorations, by working closely with our lab technicians. This allows you to get full-mouth restorations, or dental implants, dentures or customized shades. With the lab on-site, our prosthodontists can make adjustments as well as necessary changes during your appointment time.

Our Denver Restorative Dentistry team replaces lost teeth with natural-looking dental crowns that fit on top of the gums so that your new tooth looks and functions normally again.
