Even though tooth enamel is very strong, it can still be fractured. A tooth fracture is also known as a tooth crack, and it can occur when you apply unnatural pressure to the teeth, like when you use your teeth as tools or when you chew on things like ice, pens, and pencils.

When your tooth is cracked, it’s important to get it treated right away. This is because the longer you wait and the more pressure you apply to the tooth, the bigger the crack can get. As the crack grows, it can compromise the entire tooth and even infect the internal structures, like the pulp and nerve. This can result in extreme amounts of pain and discomfort. It’s important to avoid this as much as possible, which is why you need to visit your dentist, Dr. Taylor Goggins, as soon as possible.

The treatment involved in treating a cracked tooth varies depending on the severity of the crack. Your dentist will typically use a dental filling, a dental crown, root canal therapy, or tooth extraction to restore your oral health. To know if you need treatment, you need to look for the signs and symptoms. The most common symptoms include a sharp pain when using the tooth or tooth sensitivity when eating or drinking hot or cold foods and drinks.

A cavity that affects one of your teeth can often start out small. As time goes on, the tooth decay will continue to spread. If you forego professional treatment with Dr. Taylor Goggins, the tooth can become so badly compromised that it severely fractures near the gumline.

Dr. Goggins might be able to treat a tooth in this condition by performing a root canal. This will save the tooth so that it can serve as an anchor for a dental crown.

In a case where the damage to the tooth is severe, or a large abscess develops in the gums Dr. Goggins might suggest an extraction. After any infected material has been removed, Dr. Goggins will suture your gums and provide you with a prescription for pain medication and antibiotics.

After your gums have healed, Dr. Goggins can help you understand your dental restoration options. One of the more effective and popular options is a dental bridge.

This is a single artificial tooth that will be fused to open crowns on each end. This typically requires two separate appointments. The first prepares the two neighboring teeth as abutments, or anchors for the dental bridge. After the bridge has been created in a dental lab, Dr. Goggins will cement the dental work in place with a strong dental adhesive.

If you are in the Broomfield, Colorado, area and have lost a tooth to an untreated cavity, you should call 303-586-1019 to seek professional treatment at Denver Restorative Dentistry.

Pain within a tooth, severe sensitivity, pressure, or discomfort in your gums can be a serious cause for concern. These classic symptoms of a toothache often indicate that the internal structures of the tooth have been compromised by dental trauma, an untreated cavity, or severe tooth decay.

The longer you delay in seeking professional treatment at Dr. Taylor Goggins’s dental office the more likely you are to experience increasing pain and more severe complications.

If your toothache pain is related to untreated tooth decay it likely means that the bacterial presence has penetrated the pulp, nerve, or root of the tooth. If you have recently suffered a dental trauma, it’s possible that the accident may have injured the internal structures of the tooth or an area of gum tissue. Even if the traumatic event occurred a few days ago, the toothache could be the result of inflammation.

Once Dr. Taylor Goggins has assessed and diagnosed the underlying cause of your toothache they will present you with some possible treatment options. In many cases, this calls for performing a root canal to extract any compromised structures. Once this is done they will restore sufficient structure to secure a dental crown in place.

If you are in the Broomfield, Colorado area and you are suffering from toothache pain, please call 303-586-1019 to seek care at Denver Restorative Dentistry. We look forward to helping you maintain your healthy smile!

At Denver Restorative Dentistry, Dr. Goggins and Dr. Esguerra are happy to help our patients in Broomfield, Colorado with all of their oral care needs. Did you know that tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the body, even harder than the bones? Still, those pearly whites can be injured and sustain cracked or fractured teeth.

While you can’t always tell if you have a cracked tooth, if you feel a sharp pain when you bite down on your food which stops when you stop putting pressure on your tooth, your tooth may have a fracture. A tooth can crack for a number of reasons:

  • If you chew on hard objects such as ice, hard candy, or hard nuts you can fracture a tooth.
  • A blow to the mouth can crack a tooth.
  • If tooth enamel is exposed to temperature extremes, your tooth can crack. So if you are eating hot soup, don’t be tempted to sip ice water with it.
  • Your teeth can crack if you persistently grind or clench your teeth (also known as bruxism).

To repair a cracked tooth, Dr. Goggins or Dr. Esguerra will first examine the tooth to determine proper treatment. For example, if the tooth has minor cracks, bonding with a tooth-colored composite resin or dental filling may be all that will be required. However, if the damage is severe or affecting the tooth pulp, the tooth may require extraction, requiring a root canal.

If you are suffering from the effects of a cracked tooth, please call us at 303-586-1019 as soon as possible. Until you are seen by Dr. Goggins or Dr. Esguerra, avoid chewing on that side of your mouth, take acetaminophen or over-the-counter pain reliever as needed, and rinse with salt water for relief.  Our Denver Restorative Dentistry team in Broomfield, Colorado, is happy to help you restore your healthy smile!
