A dental implant is essentially a titanium abutment that is inserted into the underlying bone in your jaw. Then a crown made from porcelain, gold or metal alloy is cemented on top of it.

Your dentist, Dr. Taylor Goggins, will first assess your jaw structure to make sure you have enough bone material to secure a dental implant. If the extraction process also removed some bone tissues in the socket, you might need to receive a bone graft to restore the missing structure.

Dr. Taylor Goggins will then refer you to an oral surgeon who will install the implant. The oral surgeon will make a careful incision in your gums. A narrow channel will be made into the bone. A titanium implant will then be screwed into the channel in the bone and your gums will be sutured closed.

Titanium is the ideal substance for the abutment as it is biologically safe. In time, it will become one with your natural bone in a process known as osseointegration.

Once your gums have healed and the titanium implant has been fully integrated into the surrounding bone tissues, Dr. Taylor Goggins will take an impression. This will be sent to a dental lab where a new crown will be fashioned from porcelain, gold or base metal alloys.
